In other articles I have written I have wrote about how modern technology is helping to advance capabilities within the medical industry, from 3D printed body parts to robotic limbs and artificial intelligence programs that diagnose and prescribe more accurately than humans. Unfortunately there are still many killer illnesses today that we do not have cures for, one of the most well known diseases is cancer, an illness that has taken so many lives including some of my own family members and friends. The disease doesn't seem to be slowing down, but with todays technology we are detecting it earlier and finding new ways to battle it. One company that is pioneering cancer detection technology is Miroculus. Miroculus have developed a 3D printed device that is said to be able to detect cancer and other diseases in just under an hour. The device is an amazing piece of equipment and will no doubt change the lives of many people, helping to find cancer and other diseases at early stages. Miroculus is a ”single, accurate, affordable and non-invasive microRNA detection platform in 3 steps ” using MicroRNA Profiling which can detect microRNAs without using expensive equipment, trapping them and changing color to green to show that they have been detected. The whole process takes about 60 minutes to complete and uses state of the art technology on a connected smart phone to allow medical staff to monitor results. The smartphone application receives the data from the device and analyses them to see the brightness and speed of the shine allowing the app to know whether microRNAs are present in the blood. Data is stored in the cloud allowing the company to provide analytics that help medical staff to keep track and visualize trends over time. With this technology it will massively reduce the cost of cancer detection and help medical staff take early action against the disease. Miroculus state in their video (shown below) that 1 in 3 people will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives, as Miroculus provides a way to catch the disease early it will hopefully result in a lower death rate for people diagnosed with the killer disease. I am very happy to see modern technology being used in such an important field and look forward to following the progress of the project. You can check out some screen shots of the Miroculus website which provides some further information on how the device works, check out the video below and visit their website in the link above. Currently their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/miroculus) has only 1867 followers, I hope that those of you that take the time to read this article also take the time to like and share their page. This type of technology and the hard work that its developers are putting in really deserves to get more publicity.
